gout3For patients who have gout, the European Medicine Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) is promoting the authorization of a gout medicine called Lesinurad. Lesinurad “is a selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitor” that will help reduce uric acid levels in gout patients, aiding in the reduction of inflammation. Lesinurad does have some reported side effects to look out for, including: “headache, influenza, increased serum creatinine, and gastroesophageal reflux.” However, if approved, lesinurad will be “the first selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitor (SURI) to treat patients with inadequately controlled gout in Europe.”

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If your feet are hurting, see one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your heel pain symptoms in addition to other podiatric-related needs.

What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Causes of Blisters

blister6Blisters are some of the most common foot conditions patients can develop. Most blisters on the feet are caused by friction, which often occurs when a poor fitting shoe rubs against the skin of the foot. Other skin conditions, such as eczema, Athlete’s foot, bacterial infections or allergic reactions can cause blisters as well. Excessive moisture can cause friction, which in turn can create blisters.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, see one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your heel pain symptoms in addition to other podiatric-related needs.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

runningConsider placing arch supports and soft insoles in your shoes, Dr. Steve Rosenberg, podiatrist, advises when accommodating your feet, especially at formal events. The foot support these products offer will help “cushion the foot from heel to toe and prevent the arch from collapsing while standing,” Rosenberg says. The support these products offer will also help with reducing bunion pain, swelling in the toe, and prevent slipping in shoes that are too large. He suggests looking for shoes that have “instant arches,” which can help prevent foot problems.

Proper foot support is of utmost importance in foot health. If your heel is hurting, see one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your heel pain symptoms in addition to other podiatric-related needs.

The Importance of Proper Foot Support

Walking is an everyday function for both men and women, and in order to keep your body’s balance in order, you are going to need shoes that provide the proper kinds of support.

Poor foot support can cause pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips, knees, neck and shoulder. It also can lead to emotional stress, and physiological changes in the body. In order to avoid these problems, you must have proper foot support.

The arch is the most important part of the foot, which is where most of the support and balance of your feet lies. The arch of your foot varies in height, and as you age, this height can change. Proper foot support will help musculoskeletal issues, which causes inactivity or disability.

When looking for shoes that give proper support to your feet, you should refrain from wearing ill-fitting shoes. If footwear is too tight, this can affect the body’s posture, stress, bone deformities, and other foot and back pain. Therefore, it is important that shoes fit well in order to avoid these complications.

Sport Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports-related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
