Foot ExercisesYamuna Zake, known for her foot yoga and body rolling techniques has partnered with Vogue to give readers arch exercises to spare their feet when wearing high heels. Zake believes that the stronger you make your foot; the longer heel wearers can withstand their shoes and avoid foot problems. After a night of wearing heels, the 60 year-old suggests using a tennis ball to roll your arches for five minutes to stretch and strengthen the foot. The rolling method may also reduce any swelling in the ankles. Other exercises include balancing the body’s weight on the outside edge of the foot, base of the toes, the heel and ball of the foot with shift the pressure amongst the muscles and tendons of the lower extremities. Zake also states that while wearing heels, stand with the feet parallel and equally distribute your weight to the outside edge of the feet. She emphasizes the importance of posture as well as putting the pressure on the outside edges of the feet rather than on the balls of the feet.

Exercising the feet can be very helpful in reducing the stress we put our feet when wearing certain shoes. To learn more, consult with one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors will answer any of your foot and ankle related concerns.

Exercise for Your Feet

If you spend most of your time on your feet, or don’t either way your feet should deserve attention. There are many people who exercise regularly and still don’t spend enough time to care for their feet. Your foot does get exposure that requires maintenance since your health has a lot to do with footing.

Exercises

Toe rise – this exercise involves standing on the tip-toes for a count of 15 seconds, then resting your feet on ground. This exercise should be repeated three times a day to strengthen the feet.

Toe Pick-ups – the toes are exercises that are done by picking up small items using your toes. This helps strengthen the muscles on the upper part of the feet. Three sets along with 15 seconds being held should be completed. Small items like marbles or stationary will work.

Ankle Pump – can be performed upwards or downwards. The workout can be completed both ways at the same time. This involves flexing the foot either towards the shin or to the ground. This makes the foot work very well, working large parts of the muscles.

Broken ToeQueens Park Rangers Football Club based in White City, London is considering allowing midfielder Niko Kranjcar to play the next couple of games despite having a broken toe. Kranjcar has become a very important player to the team recently and all, including himself and his coaches, would like him play QPR’s next game against Liverpool.

If Kranjcar chooses to play, he risks hurting the injury even more and potentially keeping himself from playing for even longer than if he just let the current injury heal. “They were talking about Niko being out for five or six weeks, but he wants to get it injected and play.” states QPR manager, Harry Redknapp.

Broken toes are unpleasant injuries that can make walking tough and can cause a lot of problems if not healed properly. To get assistance with this type of condition, call one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors will diagnose which bone in your toe is broken and get you an appropriate form of treatment.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture). Another type of trauma that can break a toe is repeated activity that places stress on the toe for prolonged periods of time.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • throbbing pain

  • swelling

  • bruising on the skin and toenail

  • the inability to move the toe with ease.

  • toe appears crooked or disfigured

  •  tingling or numbness in the toe

  • injured person experiences fever or chills throughout their body, and when there is an open, bleeding wound present on the toe.

Generally, a minor toe break will heal without long-term complications, but it is important to discontinue activities that put pressure on the toe. It is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated on pillows. Swelling can be alleviated by placing an ice pack on the broken toe for 15 minutes every two hours during the first two days after the fracture.

Up until its ban in 1911, foot binding was practiced in China until the 10th century. In ancient times, having small feet was a symbol of status and beauty in women. This status signified a wife who was submissive and did not complain. Performed by mothers-in-law and matchmakers, foot binding was a process that ensured that the woman’s feet did not grow.

Hong Kong photographer Jo Farrell documented the last remaining survivors, who are well into their eighties and older. Farrell describes these women as ‘some of the most amazing, kind, compassionate, and generous women I have ever met’, even in spite of the intense pain involved.

Thankfully, foot binding has no place in any kind of everyday foot care. If you are dealing with foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Our doctors can treat your foot and ankle needs.

Every Day Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. After all, without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks. It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before, for example.

For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops.

Also, wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat. Also make sure that the socks fit properly and are not uncomfortably tight.

Walking and ExercisingShoe makers are now creating foot-shaped running shoes that follow the foot’s natural anatomic shape to allow room for the toes to stretch naturally. In the past, some hardcore runners have gone as far as removing their toenails to avoid the damage created from repetitively slamming their toes into the front of their narrow shoes. This action would create blackened toenails, which in recent years have become a twisted badge of honor for more intense runners. Fortunately, the creation of these foot-shaped shoes will keep toes from being ruined while also allowing for comfort and balance of the foot. Shoes include Altra Paradigm, ZEMgear Terra Tech, Merrell Bare Access, and Topo Runduro.
Running shoes should be selected based on their comfort and support. For more information about what to look for in choosing a running shoe, consult with .podiatrists Dr. Angelo Sutera and Scott Jones of Sutera and Jones Surgical Podiatry. Choosing the Right Running Shoes for Your Foot Type

Running is a physical activity although fun, can put a lot of stress on the joints, bones and ligaments of the body. Injury and stress on the foot can be an important factor on which kind of shoe you’re wearing. Running shoes should be worn based on your foot type. It is important to find out what fits you based on cushioning, stability and motion.

Determining your type

Speak with a shoe specialist or retail professional to see what your foot type is. They will be able to identify and measure your arch type, stride and gait.

Running Mechanics

When you are running or walking in your shoes, every step determines how your foot is landing. Pronation is the natural rolling of your ankle from outside to inside during foot strike.

Pronation is a correct form of walking or running. It helps absorb shock and store energy from your lower extremities.

footThaddeus Delaney, kindergartener at Denver Public Schools was involved in an accident with a township school bus. The five-year-old broke three bones in his foot when a third grader at the school pushed him under a school bus as it was approaching. The victim states that he was trying to give his sister a hug when the incident occurred. After the bus ran over his legs, Delaney was taken to the hospital by ambulance. “He’s been mean to me all my life,” Thaddeus said of the bully while sitting in a wheelchair with an orange cast on his leg. “There’s gotta be a point where it’s gotta stop, it’s got to,” his mother added.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot ‘breaking’, or fracturing. Bones typically break when the bone is bent, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.
Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blue (foot)
  • Numbness
  • Cold
  • Misshapen
  • Cuts
  • Deformities

Those who are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect that they have a broken foot, should seek medical attention in a center where x-rays can be performed. This is especially urgent if any of the symptoms include numbness, blue coloring, cold feet, cuts, misshapen toes or deformities as these indicate more severe cases.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated.
